Dodgers Vs. Pirates Recap: Hanley Ramirez Leads Hitting Spree

[new_royalslider id=”156″] With the Pittsburgh Pirates looking to get their third consecutive win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, Harrison singled off Hyun-Jin Ryu to open the game. Josh Harrison was then ruled out at second base as Dee Gordon dropped the exchange in an attempt to turn a double play. Ryu then retired Andrew McCutchen and Gaby Sanchez to end the inning.

Andre Ethier walked and took second on a Yasiel Puig grounder to third base. Hanley Ramirez picked up where he left off in Friday’s game and hit an RBI single to center to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Ramirez then stole second and Adrian Gonzalez walked to put two on with two outs for Matt Kemp, who didn’t have a hit in his last 20 at-bats. Kemp hit a single to left that scored Ramirez and the Dodgers had a 2-0 lead.

Jordy Mercer and Chris Stewart both reached in the second inning with two outs, but Ryu kept the Pirates off the scoreboard by getting Brandon Cumpton to ground out to end the inning. Ryu picked up his second strikeout of the game in the third inning as he retired the Pirates side in order. Ramirez picked up his second RBI of the game in the bottom of the third with a single that scored Ethier and moved Puig into scoring position.

Adrian Gonzalez followed with an RBI double that scored Ethier and the Dodgers held a 4-0. Ramirez scored on a Matt Kemp hit a sacrifice fly and Justin Turner hit an RBI single as the Dodgers took a 6-0 lead into the fourth inning. Ryu retired the first two batters in the top of the fourth before Jose Tabata reached on an infield single and came around to score on a Mercer double.

Dee Gordon hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fourth but was caught in a run down on a Puig grounder to third. With Puig standing on first, Ramirez hit a two-run homer to center and the Dodgers continued to pull away from the Pirates. The Dodger hitting spree continued as Gonzalez, Kemp and Turner all hit singles with Turner’s scoring Gonzalez.

Jeanmar Gomez relieved Cumpton after Turner’s single and he promptly allowed a triple to Drew Butera that scored Kemp and Turner, and the Dodgers led, 11-1. Gomez led off the fifth with a single and the Pirates quickly had runners on second and third with no outs as Harrison followed with a double. Gomez attempted to score on a McCutchen grounder hit to Turner but he was nailed at the plate. Ryu got out of the inning by getting Sanchez to line out.

The Pirates scored their second run of the game on a trio of singles in the sixth, with pinch-hitter Travis Snider driving in Mercer. Bryan Morris took the mound in the bottom of the sixth, but it made no difference for Ramirez, who hit his second home run of the game to tie his career-high of five RBIs in a single game and the Dodgers led 12-2.

Jamey Wright relieved Ryu in the seventh and pitched three scoreless innings to finish off the Dodger win and earn a three-inning save; just the second save of his career.
