Dodgers Were First Team to Call Tanner Scott, Who Was ‘Really Happy’ LA Made Offer

The Los Angeles Dodgers finally united with left-handed reliever Tanner Scott. The Dodgers attempted to trade for Scott at the deadline but ultimately decided he was too expensive.

A few days after landing another Japanese-born superstar pitcher Roki Sasaki, Los Angeles signed Scott to a four-year, $72 million deal. The 2024 National League All-Star’s contract is much larger than a typical contract the Dodgers would offer a free agent reliever.

Scott went head-to-head with the Dodgers in this year’s NL Division Series. Despite Scott preventing any runs, the Dodgers eliminated the San Diego Padres from the postseason.

When he entered free agency, Scott said the Dodgers were the first team to call him about a potential offer. He expressed his excitement about the reigning World Series champions.

“They’re not a fun team to face, especially one, two, three — it’s kind of unfair,” Scott said. “I was really happy that (the Dodgers) made an offer. … I know we’re ready to win another (championship). I’ll be a part of this one.”

The Dodgers’ bullpen proved its depth throughout the postseason as it carried the weight of being limited to three healthy starters. In Game 4 of the NLDS, Dave Roberts used eight different relievers, which prevented the Padres’ lineup from getting comfortable.

The addition of Scott makes the bullpen even deeper and gives the Dodgers their third southpaw option, along with Alex Vesia and Anthony Banda.

Scott produced the strongest full season of his career, logging a 1.75 ERA and 84 strikeouts across 72 appearances.

He earned his second NL Reliever of the Month honor in July after the Miami Marlins traded him. Through July, Scott recorded nine scoreless outings and converted all six of his save opportunities. The selection made Scott the Marlins’ first reliever to win the honor multiple times.

Signing Scott is just one of the Dodgers’ many offseason moves regarding the bullpen. Los Angeles also reportedly agreed to a deal with two-time All-Star reliever Kirby Yates and re-signed two-time World Series champion reliever Blake Treinen.
