Dodgers, Yankees Blockbuster Trade Idea Involving All-Star Pitcher, Outfielder Ahead of Opening Day

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a surplus of pitching talent entering the 2025 season.

After a postseason in which they had just three healthy starting pitchers in Jack Flaherty, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Walker Buehler, the Dodgers spared no expenses putting together a group that has the potential to be one of the best rotations in MLB history.

Three starting pitchers in Bobby Miller, Tony Gonsolin, and Dustin May — all capable of playing a major role in a big league starting rotation — entered spring training in a competition for the No. 5 starter spot. Miller got hit by a line drive in the Cactus League opener, Gonsolin suffered a minor back issue in camp, and just like that, May earned the starting role.

Gonsolin is already on the 15-day injured list, while Miller is starting the year in Triple-A. In addition to that depth, the Dodgers have a handful of capable starting pitchers including Landon Knack, Ben Casparius, Justin Wrobleski, Nick Frasso, and players expected to join midseason including Clayton Kershaw, Emmet Sheehan, and Shohei Ohtani.

With all the depth, the Dodgers could afford to move off of at least one of their pitchers to a team in need of starting pitching. And as of now, there are few contenders in greater need than the New York Yankees.

The Yankees already lost ace Gerrit Cole for the season due to a Tommy John surgery, and reigning Rookie of the Year Luis Gil will miss significant time with a lat injury. Starter Clarke Schmidt is also a candidate to open the season on the IL due to shoulder fatigue.

Thus, the Yankees and Dodgers are a perfect trading partner, and New York would likely be interested in the established Gonsolin as a middle of the rotation option.

Gonsolin, 30, is just three years removed from an All-Star 2022 campaign in which he went 16-1 with a 2.14 ERA. However, he struggled across 20 starts in 2023, and ended up undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Gonsolin missed all of 2024 and suffered an unfortunate setback with his back injury in 2025, but proved this spring he’s still capable of pitching at a high level. Albeit in limited action, he didn’t allow a run across three innings of work.

Gonsolin is due $5.4 million this year and has one more year of team control, and would be a perfect fit for New York’s rotation.

The Yankees could send back a package headlined by outfield prospect Everson Pereira as well as a lower-level pitcher for the one-time All-Star.

Pereira, 23, had an OPS of .859 across 40 Triple-A games last year. He would give the centerfield-needy Dodgers a potential option to man the middle of the outfield if Andy Pages struggles defensively.

  1. Just speculation…we do not need a center fielder as we have two as good or better than who is speculated to come from the Yanks.
