ESPYs Recognize Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani With 2 Award Nominations

Summertime means ESPY award season, and Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani has two nominations this year.

The annual ceremony, known as the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly, honors athletes across professional and collegiate sports and the pivotal moments from the year. This year’s awards ceremony is scheduled to air on July 11.

Ohtani is nominated for Best MLB Player, alongside Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr., Rangers shortstop Corey Seager, and Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole. Coincidentally, all four players have faced significant injuries that have affected their season. However, all of them have made an impact on their sport and the fans.

The Japanese superstar is also nominated for Best Athlete, Men’s Sport joining NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes, professional golfer Scottie Scheffler, and NHL center Connor McDavid. Each one of these men is also nominated for a sport-specific award.

Ohtani won both awards in 2022, and has won the Best MLB Player award for the last three. If he wins a fourth, he will become the first MLB player to win the award four consecutive times, passing Barry Bonds’ record of three consecutive wins from 2002-04.

Fans can vote for Ohtani here until 2 p.m. PT on July 11, then tune in at 2 p.m. to find out the winners across all 22 categories.
