A Los Angeles native, Strawberry played three (1991-93) of his 17 major league seasons with his hometown Dodgers. His five-year, $20.25 million contract made him the second-highest paid player in baseball when it became official on Nov. 8, 1990.

Injuries and off-the-field issues marred the later years of the contract following Strawberry’s All-Star 1991 season. The Dodgers ended up buying out his contract and releasing Strawberry in May 1994, setting off a baseball odyssey that took the former star to San Francisco, back to New York with the Yankees, and even the independent St. Paul Saints in 1996.

Strawberry retired after the 1999 season with 335 home runs and 1,000 RBIs for the Dodgers, Giants, Yankees and New York Mets.

Dodgers Nation sends its best wishes to Strawberry in his recovery.

  1. Daryl was a heck of a player and a solid person when I had the pleasure to get to know him in a men’s Christian retreat at Pepperdine. My prayers will continue to be with you brother.
