Former Dodgers Closer Says He’s ’99 Percent Retired’

Pitcher Javy Guerra, who made his major league debut with the Dodgers in 2011 and played for six major league organizations in his career, told Dodgers Nation that he is “99.9 percent retired.”

Barring a last-minute contract offer from an MLB organization, that will end the 20-year career of the last active member of the Dodgers’ 2004 draft class.

Guerra, 38, had spent the last two seasons pitching in Mexico following an 11-year major league career. He was 11-13 with 33 saves for the Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, Toronto Blue Jays, and Washington Nationals from 2011-21.

The 21 saves Guerra converted for the Dodgers in 2011 proved to be a single-season career high. He remained the team’s closer at the outset of the 2012 season, but was removed from the role a month into the season. Kenley Jansen took over and finished that year with 25 saves; his 350 saves in a Dodger uniform over the next decade set a franchise record.

The Dodgers designated Guerra for assignment in spring training of 2014, and he was quickly claimed by the White Sox. Although Guerra was never able to replicate his early-career success as a closer, he carved out a serviceable big league career as a relief pitcher, making 272 appearances.

Guerra won his only World Series with the Nationals in 2019, making two appearances out of the bullpen against the Houston Astros in the seven-game series. He was designated for assignment by Washington in Aug. 2021, effectively ending his major league career.

In 2023 with the Tijuana Toros, Guerra had a 5.77 ERA with one save in 43 appearances, all in relief.

Dodgers Nation wishes Guerra the best of luck in his future endeavors.
