Former Dodgers LHP Rich Hill Placed on Waivers By Padres, Should LA Bring Him Back?

The San Diego Padres reportedly made a move on Tuesday, placing LHP Rich Hill on waivers a little over a month after trading for him from Pittsburgh. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported the move.

Hill tossed 119 innings with the Pirates in 2023 to the tune of a 4.76 ERA providing serviceable innings in the 22 games for the Pirates.

The Padres traded for him and Ji-Man Choi at this year’s deadline to help an injured rotation and provide a DH bat to make a push for a Wild Card spot.

Choi is now on the injured list and Hill has made five starts for San Diego, pitching to the tune of a 9.27 ERA and an 0-4 record.

Hill was meant to eat innings for the Padres and allow 2-3 runs an outing given that he goes at least 6 innings of work. Hill has failed to reach the 6th inning in any of his appearances for the Friars and has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball since the deadline.

Could the Dodgers take a flier on him?

The only reason Hill would be added to the Dodgers roster right now is to help rest other pitchers like Clayton Kershaw, who is pitching through injury but still wants to help the team win.

At this point, Hill is not really an innings eater since he has only pitched 4 or more innings twice since his move down to San Diego.

Hill is an experienced veteran who pitched well for the Dodgers years ago and maybe a change of scenery to something more familiar might be good for the aged veteran. However, the Dodgers most likely won’t take a flier on this aged veteran, especially after calling up a young pitcher the complete opposite of Hill in RHP Kyle Hurt.

Rich Hill will stay on the Padres roster if he clears waivers.
