Freddie Freeman At a Loss for Words Over Dodgers’ Rough Patch

The Dodgers are in the midst of a rough patch that the team hasn’t seen much of lately. Coming off a sweep this past weekend at the hands of the rival San Francisco Giants, LA has gone just 5-10 during the month of June and they have slipped down to third place within the NL West. Normally good at home, the Dodgers went 2-4 over this most recent home stand, including a 15-0 loss Saturday night to the Giants.

All-Star Freddie Freeman spoke about the Dodgers struggles and what he thinks is going wrong.

“It’s not the ideal situation right now,” Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “It’s hard to even put into words. Every day we come in with the right attitude. … And every day it’s another loss right now. It’s one of these trying points in the season where you have to grind, keep coming every single day to show up, and expect to win. Our team is way too good to go through this stretch.”

Freeman is correct that this team is too good to being going through this stretch but it’s the reality that the Dodgers are in currently. They have had no consistency out on the field of late and honestly, you never know what to expect from the games anymore. LA is looking like the team that many believe they would be entering the season after losing a ton of talent during the winter.

Yet, despite all the issues that surround this team, they still are only a few games back of the division lead. If they can clean up their play and get back to the basics, maybe they can recover. But this team isn’t on the same level as years past. They have some real holes on the roster that need to be filled sooner rather than later. Manager Dave Roberts spoke about the stretch and how they can right the ship.

“If you look back at this two-week stretch, there’s a lot of things we’re not doing well,” Roberts said. “We’re not playing clean baseball, fundamental baseball. I think it’s going back to, not just trying to win, but focus on the little things: catching the baseball, minimize walks, throwing to the right base, not getting thrown out on the bases. Executing a pickoff play – those are the things that are coming back to haunt us. Typically we’re much better at that.”

The Dodgers were embarrassed this past weekend by their rivals. Maybe this is what it takes to get the spark from this team. Maybe the pride kicks in and they say enough is enough. Whatever they need to do, they need to execute it quickly otherwise this season could be lost. Both the players and front office are at fault and changes need to be made as the trade deadline quickly approaches.

LA has an off day Monday before heading to play a two game series with the Angels. Maybe the extra time off will help this team get back on track.
