How Can the Dodgers Get Homefield Advantage All Through the Playoffs?
Entering the final week and a half of the regular season, the Dodgers find themselves only a few games back of the Atlanta Braves for the best record in the National League. It’s unlikely that they catch Atlanta, but the Braves have struggled of late since they clinched the NL East.
It’s likely that they have just taken their foot off the gas after winning their division, but it’s something to watch for. If the Dodgers want any shot at catching the Braves, they will need to pretty much win out the rest of the way and hope that Atlanta continues their little slide.
Manager Dave Roberts spoke about this prior to their series finale against the Detroit Tigers but made it clear that LA isn’t focused on catching the Braves.
“Obviously, there’s the benefit of looking way out to the home-field advantage in the CS,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before Wednesday’s game. “I think that it’ll play out the way it’s going to. I’m not going to make decisions on trying to catch the Braves. I think that our thought is just to beat these guys tonight and get ready for the Giants. And then however it kind of washes out, we’ll kind of prepare that way.”

The Dodgers just want to be playing the best possible baseball they can entering the playoffs. If things shake out well for them, and they catch Atlanta, then awesome. But if not, they will move forward to do their best if they match up with the Braves.
LA has a series this weekend against the San Francisco Giants before they head to Colorado and the Bay Area to close out the regular season.
The Braves have two series left against the Washington Nationals, one in Atlanta and one on the road. So, unless the Nationals go on a week-plus winning streak, it’s unlikely that the Braves slide continues.
In between those series, they have a series against the Chicago Cubs. With both the Cubs and Giants fighting for a playoff spot, both LA and Atlanta could have some say in how the NL Wild Card race turns out.
LA took two of three games from Atlanta earlier in the year on the road but then dropped three of four earlier this month at Dodger Stadium. That series is starting to look that much more important now, with only a few games separating them.
