MLB News: Tim McCarver, Longtime Baseball Broadcast, Has Died at 81
The baseball world lost a legend on Thursday with the passing of long-time MLB broadcaster and former big league catcher Tim McCarver. He was 81 years old.
McCarver was best known for his time calling games alongside Joe Buck on FOX Sports. However, he also called games with Joe’s father, Jack, and Hall of Famer Al Michaels. He covered numerous World Series and All-Star Games, and was also a regular on national baseball broadcasts like “The Game of the Week” and “Sunday Night Baseball.”
He was born on October 16, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee, and put together a 21-year baseball playing career with the Cardinals, Phillies, Red Sox and Expos. Primarily a catcher in his career, McCarver won two World Series championships during his time with the Cardinals and was a two-time All-Star.
After retiring from playing in 1980, McCarver transitioned into broadcasting. He worked as a commentator for local St. Louis Cardinals telecasts before joining national networks such as ABC, CBS, and FOX.
McCarver was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012, receiving the Ford C. Frick Award for his contributions to baseball broadcasting. The baseball world will miss this legend.
