Months After Spurning Dodgers, Eduardo Rodriguez Likely to Opt Out of Contract with Tigers

One of the weirder moments for the Dodgers this season came at the trade deadline. They believed that they were acquiring a solid left-handed pitcher to help bolster their rotation, only for things to be blown up a few minutes later.

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez was a member of the Dodgers for about two minutes before he decided to not push the trade through. It was met with a strange feeling for all involved, but LA quickly moved on from the decision.

And now with the offseason coming up, it seems that Rodriguez will be testing free agency. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the veteran pitcher will likely be opting out of his contract.

“He loves Detroit, but Eduardo Rodriguez is expected to opt out with $49M and three years to go.”

Per Jon Heyman of The NY Post

This doesn’t seem like a big deal, as players opt out all the time. But one of the reasons that Rodriguez spurned the Dodgers was because he wanted to remain with the Tigers.

Now, he could end up resigning with them on a different contract, but this is almost a slap in the face to LA. He could have been on a contending team that had a chance to win the World Series and still opted out, but he decided to cancel the trade.

Rodriguez is a good pitcher and has had a very solid season. So, he knows that he can likely get a lot more money on the open market, but I do wonder how the vetoed trade plays into things.

The Dodgers don’t want someone on the roster who doesn’t want to be there, so in a way, he did them a favor. He also saved them some prospects that they can use in a different deal as well.

Rodriguez actually took on the Dodgers a little bit ago at Dodger Stadium, and he allowed five runs over three innings of work. It remains to be seen what will happen with Rodriguez, but one thing is for sure. He won’t be signing with the Dodgers this offseason.
