Mookie Betts Doesn’t Understand Why Dodgers Are Getting Hate for Spending Big

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ big offseason has sparked a larger conversation about whether or not all of the spending the team has done is good for the MLB in particular. The Dodgers have received some criticism for how they’ve gone about the offseason in acquiring what looks like the closest to a super team the MLB has.

However, star Mookie Betts doesn’t get the criticism since the Dodgers are just trying to better their odds of winning. He appeared on AM-570 Radio and discussed this narrative.

“I don’t know what you want us to do? You want us to not win? I don’t know what you want us to do. When you’re blessed with an ability, why would you not use that? You know what I’m saying?”

The Dodgers have certainly gone all-in on winning by adding players like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the offseason on record deals. With this huge influx of talent added to an already impressive roster, the Dodgers seem ready to get past their recent playoff exits in favor of a new World Series win.

“You want us to not try and win? That’s the whole point of playing the game, right? Without getting into the business and all that stuff, sorry. Sorry for trying, guys. We won’t do that again. That doesn’t make sense.”

The Dodgers will still have to prove that their moves pay off once the season comes, but for now, they are one of the primary discussion points of the offseason as Spring Training nears.

  1. Winning has not been the issue. I mean, seriously? Having “won” the NL West 10 of the last 11 seasons. Having “won” 100 or more games in a full season 4 years in a row (and the shortened 2020 season, on pace for something like 114 wins). It’s winning when it counts. Spending money does NOT buy championships. Go way way back in history to hmm, say, 2023 and the NY Mets. And of all people to say this, Mookie? Again, seriously? The guy who infamously said when he signed here that he “didn’t come here to just win the NL West”. That Mookie??!! Win when it matters – October – or it’s just money pi$$ed down the drain.

  2. Ballplayers making $20 million a year have a different relationship with money and can lose sight of having to struggle with the cost of taking a family to a game, let alone 82 of them.
