Mookie Betts Opens Up on Postseason Struggles for Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers dropped Game 2 of the National League Divison Series on Sunday and are now tied with their division rival San Diego Padres, 1-1.

The Dodgers have traveled to San Diego for their next two games of the series. Only three outcomes are possible: the Dodgers will win the next two games and advance to the National League Championship Series, the Padres will win the next two games and advance, or they will both come back to Los Angeles for a Game 5.

Game 3 will be vital for both teams, but especially the Dodgers. The Dodgers’ offense was nowhere to be found in Game 2, as they only recorded five hits and scored two runs. The offense was as cold as it could be, and one of the biggest reasons for that was Mookie Betts’ poor play.

Betts went 0-for-4 in Sunday’s contest. After the game, he spoke about his poor performance.

“They’re all outs. So they’re all terrible,” Betts said when asked about the quality of his at-bats. “I don’t know really what to say about it. I’m giving my best, doing my best. Obviously it’s not good enough right now.

“It’s really frustrating. But nothing I can really do right now but keep going and hope it turns.”

The struggles have not only been through these two first playoff games but in his last 22 postseason at-bats. In Betts’ last 22 at-bats, he is 0-for-22. He has not had a playoff hit since the 2022 NLDS, which came in the first inning of Game 3 against the Padres.

As a Dodger, Betts’ postseason stats have been solid, slashing .255/.345/.383 with a .727 OPS, 38 hits, three home runs, 14 RBIs, and 25 runs scored in 39 games for Los Angeles. However, as of late, it has not been pretty.

In his last 39 postseason at-bats, Betts has recorded only two hits, four runs, one double, zero home runs, one RBI, eight strikeouts, and three total bases.

It will soon be time to put up or shut up, and only Betts can control that. It won’t be easy, as Michael King will be on the mound for the Padres in Game 2. Nonetheless, they have a golden opportunity to strike first, similar to what the Padres did in the first two games of the series.
