Padres Manager Mike Shildt Appears to Take Shot at Dodgers’ Dave Roberts

The Dodgers may have landed the first punch in the NLDS, but the Padres delivered a knockout blow.

Throughout the season, the Padres prided themselves on their ability to bounce back. On Sunday night, the Padres not only bounced back, but managed to embarrass the Dodgers in a 10-2 victory at Chavez Ravine.

Ahead of Game 1, manager Dave Roberts said the Dodgers had to land the “first punch” in the long-awaited brawl, otherwise known as the National League Division Series. After Game 2, Padres manager Mike Shildt took aim at Roberts’ previous comments.

“The series started with a comment about a fight and punching and we’re going to beat them to the punch and all that,” Shildt said in reference to Roberts saying the Dodgers had to land the first punch. “… But we’ve been punching on the field all year. What I got out of it was a bunch of dudes that showed up in front of a big, hostile crowd with stuff being thrown at them and said, ‘We’re going to talk with our play; we’re not going to back down; we’re going to elevate our game; we’re going to be together; and we’re going to take care of business.’”

The debacle of Dodgers fans was more embarrassing than the 10-2 stomp by the Padres, but there is no denying San Diego took care of business in Game 2. The NLDS is now tied at one game a piece, a daunting prospect for a Dodgers team headed to Petco Park.

The Dodgers will turn to Walker Buehler to give the club an edge in Game 3 at Petco Park. Buehler’s last performance certainly showed promise.

In late September, Buehler allowed just one run across five innings against the Padres. It was an encouraging 71-pitch outing from the 30-year-old.

The Dodgers hope Buehler can replicate that type of performance in San Diego Tuesday night. His late September performance provoked a sigh of relief from Dodgers fans.

Buehler’s ability was in question after a season abundant with struggle. The right-hander has yet to pass the ultimate test of the postseason.

Meanwhile, the Padres will have Michael King on the mound who is fresh off a 12-strikeout performance against the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card Series.

One thing is certain, fans are tired of division title and regular season records. Fans are desperate for a ring.

  1. What Schildt is describing as his players behavior is not accurate. Grown men taunting fans is not my idea of taking care of business.

  2. Maybe if Profar and Tatis weren’t spending their time taunting the fans they wouldn’t get the kind of reactions that “stupid” gets. As Forrest Gump reminds us, “Stupid is as stupid does!” Nuff said.

  3. Tatis jr. Is no more than an entitled punk. Who has yet to reach his maturity point. I also want to go on record as saying the dodgers have a truly horrible conditioning program that over the last few years has provided for many players going on the IR. This comes down to management and I believe Dave Roberts needs to go I’ve been saying this for 3 years now he’s a player’s friend we don’t need a friend for our players we need someone that they respect and they will listen to that will make rational decisions. His handling of the pitching staff is horrendous it has been for the last few years he takes players out too soon he leaves players in too long. I truly believe they’ll never win another world series with him at the helm.

    1. Do not know who Edd Brown is but what you say is 100% right on. I have said for years ROBERTS is No major league manager!!!!!!!

    2. Dave Roberts is an excellent manager. The results of the last season speak for itself. The starting pitching staff was decimated and yet still we won the division. Conditioning has nothing to do with the injuries sustained, and try to tell Rich Hill that Roberts is players manager especially after he was pulled from a no-hitter for the good of the team.
