VIDEO: Catcher Drew Butera Throws A Scoreless Ninth Inning
In the midst of a 13-3 blowout game, manager Don Mattingly turned to his bench in the final inning in order to save his bullpen a bit. Starter Paul Maholm was rocked to the tune of 10 runs (five earned) in just 3.2 innings. Five relievers followed Maholm and backup catcher Drew Butera was sent out to get the final three outs.
This was Butera’s second time on the mound in his career, tossing a scoreless inning for the Minnesota Twins before. Butera was able to record a perfect inning, capped by a strikeout of Marcell Ozuna on a 94 MPH fastball. The catcher kept his 0.00 career ERA intact and took the place of Skip Schumaker as the team’s position player that can pitch in blowouts.
Hopefully this is the last time that Mattingly and the Dodgers will need Butera to take the mound for the rest of this season.
