The 26-year-old outfielder was designated for assignment this week, and the Dodger skipped the waiver line to add Ruiz. However, it didn’t come at no cost.

The Dodgers are trading right-handed pitcher Carlos Duran to the A’s for Ruiz.

Who is Carlos Duran for Dodgers?

Duran, 23, is a pitching prospect who opened the year in the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets’ rotation. In his first start of the year, he threw 4.1 innings, allowing just one run while striking out eight.

Duran has been in the Dodgers organization since 2018, when he signed as an international free agent. The 6-foot-7 hurler worked his way up through the minor leagues, and finally reached Triple-A in 2024.

Across three minor league levels in 2024, Duran made 19 starts, sporting a 4.73 ERA with 73 strikeouts across 53.1 innings.

Duran is close to being ready to make his MLB debut. With the influx of pitching talent on the Dodgers roster and in the minor leagues, it would have been tough for Duran to find a path in L.A.

Now, he should get an opportunity to debut with the Athletics in the near future, where he’ll hope to be a key piece of their rotation for years to come.

As for the Dodgers, they get an outfielder who they hope they’ll be able to develop into a serviceable Major League hitter, with speed being his No. 1 attribute.
