Former Dodgers Outfielder David Peralta Reportedly Signs Minor-League Deal With NL West Rival

Former Dodgers outfielder David Peralta has signed with the San Diego Padres on a minor-league deal per Robert Murray of FanSided. After undergoing offseason elbow surgery, Peralta signed on with the Chicago Cubs but opted out of the deal to enter back into free agency.

With Los Angeles last year, Peralta slashed .259/.294/381 with seven home runs. His yearly slash line though does not tell the whole story.

In the first half of 2023, Peralta had a .743 OPS and all seven of his home runs. It was around this time that he sustained an elbow injury. Afterward, he was not the same hitter at the plate and his slugging percentage dropped nearly 100 points, he continued to play despite his injury last year, providing the Dodgers with excellent outfield defense.

Now, he could provide some depth to a Padres outfield that sorely needs it. They have gotten great production from veteran Jurickson Profar and rookie Jackson Merrill. Platinum glove winner Fernando Tatis Jr. has had a decent year, but a disappointing season for someone of his talents.

The Padres could also use a left-handed hitter off the bench. Currently, third-baseman Tyler Wade represents the club’s sole lefty bench bat.

Despite playing the majority of his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Peralta immediately endeared himself to Dodgers fans. He was always on the top step rooting on his teammates, and the team utilized his “freight train” celebration after hits.
