Former Dodgers Top Prospect Involved in Blockbuster Trade Getting Opportunity With Angels

The Los Angeles Angels are taking a chance on a former Los Angeles Dodgers top prospect.

On Wednesday, the Angels announced they were placing former All-Star infielder Miguel Sanó on the injured list. To replace him on the active roster, the team called up outfielder Willie Calhoun.

Calhoun, 29, was once a top prospect in the Dodgers organization. The Dodgers drafted Calhoun in the fourth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He was ranked as high as the Dodgers’ No. 4 prospect in 2017, per MLB Pipeline.

However, in 2017, just before the MLB Trade Deadline, the Dodgers swung a blockbuster deal with the Texas Rangers, bringing right-handed pitcher Yu Darvish to Los Angeles. Going back to Texas was right-handed pitcher A.J. Alexy, infielder Brendon Davis and Calhoun.

Calhoun was the centerpiece of that deal, but unfortunately, just hasn’t been able to put it all together at the MLB level.

Calhoun hasn’t played 90 games in a season in his career, and has only played more than 45 games twice, in 2019 and 2021.

Calhoun’s best season came in 2019, when he slashed .269/.323/.524 with 21 home runs and 48 RBIs in 83 games. However, he hasn’t hit more than six home runs in a season since, and had just five long balls in 44 games with the New York Yankees last year.

The Angels signed Calhoun to a minor league deal this offseason, and he’s now getting an opportunity with all the injuries in Anaheim. In 26 games in Triple-A this year, Calhoun slashed .268/.346/.361 with one home run and 12 RBIs.

  1. I guess James Outman is basically out the lineup anymore, Coach Pinhead is now just playing with the guys head by always putting in Kiki who sucks and there is no way James Outman can get going playing 1out of every 3or 4 games and taken out every time the game is close and we are behind, that would be impossible for Mookie, Freddie,or Otani- to get going, Coach Roberts is squeezing James Outman out and definitely not platooning him or planning on him being his starting Center Fielder like he was supposed to be doing, Coach Roberts is full of his+%
This is why we have not been able to make it to the World Series,
