Dave Roberts Declines to Reveal How Dodgers’ Edgardo Henriquez Suffered Foot Injury

Edgardo Henriquez was spotted wearing a walking boot on his left foot Tuesday in the clubhouse at Los Angeles Dodgers spring training. The metatarsal injury Henriquez suffered will prevent him from being healthy for the start of the season.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, however, declined to reveal how Henriquez sustaineded the injury when speaking to reporters. Roberts stated that he was not “ready” to share the cause of the injury.

Henriquez’s injury is unfortunate for the young pitcher, as he is coming off the most successful season of his career, which included making his MLB debut.

The Venezuelan right-handed reliever has been with the Dodgers organization for his entire career after Los Angeles signed him as a free agent in 2018. Henriquez battled injuries in the 2021 and 2022 seasons before undergoing Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for all of 2023.

When Henriquez returned in 2024, he skyrocketed through the minor league system. He started the season with the Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and finished the season with three MLB regular season appearances and another three in the postseason.

The Dodgers promoted Henriquez to Triple-A in August, where he logged a 2.84 ERA and 18 strikeouts across 14 innings.

By September, Los Angeles called Henriquez up for his MLB debut against the San Diego Padres.

Henriquez, who will turn 23 in June, posted a 2.70 ERA across 3.1 innings with the Dodgers last season.

Before sustaining his recent injury, Henriquez made three appearances on the mound in spring training. Against the Kansas City Royals, he allowed four runs and one hit in 0.1 innings.

Henriquez also pitched one inning each against the Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants, preventing any runs or hits and notching one strikeout in both games.

The Dodgers’ pitching staff struggled to avoid injuries in 2024. Henriquez’s injury — as well as the injuries to three other relievers — are not a great sign early at Dodgers camp.
