Dave Roberts Reveals Why Freddie Freeman is Out of Dodgers Lineup vs Cubs

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Freddie Freeman’s absence from the lineup is a scheduled day off.

“He was either going to take today or tomorrow off, given that we have six in a row,” Roberts said. “Wasn’t going to play six in a row, so we just felt that today would be the best day and then we’ll run him for three against the Rockies.”

Freeman was activated from the injured list just hours before first pitch Friday. The first baseman missed nine games as he dealt with a sprained right ankle.

Freeman sustained the injury when he fell in the shower, but what was most concerning about the ailment was it hampered the same ankle he had injured last season. Though Freeman does not like missing time, he revealed the IL stint was necessary.

“I hate to admit it,” Freeman said, “but I might have needed these 10 days.”

For the series finale against the Chicago Cubs, Kiké Hernández will play at first base instead. The Dodgers are coming off their worst home loss in franchise history after the Cubs routed L.A. 16-0 Friday night.

L.A. will look to bounce back Sunday with Tyler Glasnow on the mound.
