Dave Roberts: Shohei Ohtani Hasn’t Addressed Team Since Interpeter Was Fired

Shohei Ohtani told reporters at Dodger Stadium that he will make his first public statements about the ongoing saga around his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, on Monday.

Ohtani reportedly learned of the gravity of the situation only Wednesday, when Mizuhara acknowledged he transferred money from an account belonging to Ohtani to alleged sports bookmaker. The Dodgers fired Mizuhara before the team’s next game, Thursday in Seoul, South Korea.

Meanwhile, Ohtani has not addressed the situation with his teammates as a group, manager Dave Roberts said Sunday.

The need for Ohtani to clear the air is evident. If he allows the situation to linger, speculation will follow. The potential legal consequences for Ohtani — and any potential future discipline from MLB — appear to hinge on two simple questions. What did he know about Mizuhara’s payments to the bookmaker from his account, and when?

Ostensibly, Ohtani will take time to sort out the matter for himself before addressing reporters. Before he does that, it’s wise to address his teammates first, so that everyone in the clubhouse is on the same page before the questions follow.
