Dodgers All-Star Planning on Using New Torpedo Bats That Yankees Made Famous

The Los Angeles Dodgers will soon be partaking in a trend that the New York Yankees used to take over the baseball world last week.

The new torpedo style bats have been making their rounds across the league after a 15 home run outburst the Bronx Bombers displayed across a three-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers.

The torpedo bat challenges the traditional shape of a baseball bat by moving the barrel down a few inches so that there is more weight on the sweet spot for the hitter. Because of the redistributed weight, this allows a faster swing from the batter, and more power upon contact.

Dodgers slugger Max Muncy said via the Los Angeles Times’ Jack Harris that he has already ordered a few bats to try out. He noted the somewhat stagnant history of bats.

“We just had a long conversation about (how) in the 170 years and whatever that baseball has been around, the number of changes to the baseball bat has been minimal,” said Muncy. “I mean, everyone swung ash for 140 years and then you had one guy swing maple, and then they came out with birch, and really, that’s been all the changes.

“There’s been different shapes, but there hasn’t really been anything as drastic as maybe what this is right now.”

Teammate Kiké Hernández noted the new shape of these bats and his excitement to join in on the hype.

“I have learned absolutely nothing other than that they look like bowling pins,” Hernández said. “I ordered some. All of the cool kids are doing it.”

Hopefully, the newest ‘cool kids’ to use the revolutionary bat will reap the same rewards that other stars around the league are seeing.

The newest superstar to use the bowling-pin-like bat is Cincinnati Reds’ infielder Elly De La Cruz. His torpedo debut included a 4-for-5 game with two home runs and seven RBIs in a 14-3 win over the Texas Rangers Monday.
