Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Reflects on Gavin Stone’s Impressive Game Against Padres

Entering Saturday’s game against the San Diego Padres, young right-hander Gavin Stone was looking for a dominant performance to show the decision to put him into the starting rotation was the correct move. Through his two starts entering Saturday, Stone had looked just okay, having some moments here and there.

But when his team needed it most, Stone stepped up. He shut down the San Diego Padres over 6.2 innings of work, even taking a perfect game into the 5th inning. Stone finished the game allowing two runs, while striking out four. But his command and poise all game was most impressive.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke about his performance after the fact, praising the young starter for his outing.

“We needed it. We needed the length, we needed to put up zeros and he was fantastic all night. This is what can happen when you pitch with conviction.. I can’t say enough about what Gavin Stone did tonight.”

Even amid a lengthy rain delay to start the game, Stone didn’t get rattled. He simply went about his business, showing the Dodgers the ceiling he has on the mound.

If Stone can consistently put together outings like this, the Dodgers will be in great shape. He has all the tools to be successful in the majors but consistency has been an issue throughout his young career.

With some injuries taking a toll on the Dodgers staff, they will need Stone to step up. If this is a sign of things to come, Los Angeles may have found another ace to work around.
