Dodgers-DBacks Preview: Magic Number At Four As Matt Kemp Returns

The Dodgers are coming off a disappointing series against the San Francisco Giants, losing the last three games of the series and postponing a possible NL West celebration at Dodger Stadium.

Losers of eight of their last 11 games, the Dodgers now go to Chase field to face the Diamondbacks for a four-game series. The magic number is still four, so the Dodgers need two victories to officially clinch the NL West. Although they still hold a commanding lead in the division, the Dodgers have lost ground in their chase for not only the best record in the NL, but the second best record.

After losing three in a row, the Dodgers now trail the Pirates and Cardinals for the second seed in the NL and would have to start the NLDS on the road.

The Diamondbacks will be playing for their lives in this series and although it’s unlikely they will catch the Dodgers for the division crown, they definitely want to play spoiler. Already with bad blood between the two teams, the Diamondbacks have a decent group of players that won’t just roll over and give the division title to the Dodgers.

Offensively, the Diamondbacks rank 11th in batting average and on-base percentage, while their pitching staff ranks 11th in quality starts and 15th in ERA.
