Dodgers Free Agency: Anthony Rendon Reportedly Meets with Rangers

One of the top free agent targets for the Dodgers (most of baseball, really) is former Washington 3B Anthony Rendon. The 2019 All-Star has been linked to the Dodgers early and often — especially by writers such as Jeff Passan of ESPN — but now reports are that Rendon met with Texas Rangers brass on Sunday.

The Rangers appear to be unexpected major players in the free agent market this winter. Having already inked right-handed pitcher Kyle Gibson to a 3-year pact, the club’s need for a third baseman has been well known since the retirement of Adrian Beltre.

Here’s the key excerpt from dallasnews.com:

According to three major league sources, [Texas GM Jon] Daniels headed a contingent of Rangers officials who met face-to-face with free agent third baseman Anthony Rendon and his representative Scott Boras in Houston Sunday. While no contract offer was made, according to the sources, the Rangers were there to make a presentation indicating their interest in the top position player on the free agent market.

As we’re now starting to see, clubs are beginning their official introductory meetings with top-flight free agents ahead of next week’s winter meetings in San Diego. The big news on Monday was that the Dodgers had reportedly already met with free agent pitcher Stephen Strasburg as he makes a west-coast-swing talking to interested organizations.

Additionally, Texas has also been linked to another player on LA’s radar in Josh Donaldson

As the winter trudges on, there is sure to be a lot of chatter on Rendon, Donaldson, Strasburg, and even Gerrit Cole well into January.

  1. Rendon most likely will sign with the Rangers because honestly the Dodgers are not an attractive draw for any player, and a big reason is Roberts. And it’s basically because of dodger’s desire to have players shuffled around on a daily basis in and out of lineups, switching positions and thereby contributing to the inconsistency of their play.

    1. Rendon wouldn’t be shuffled on the field but likely in the lineup because of all the other players in and out. Any big name we sign wouldn’t have to worry about getting platooned but a concern they might have is being on a team that does that far too much leaving lots of guys inconsistent like you said. The Nats showed baseball that you can win it all with a pretty standard old school formula and that’s have your 8 starters on the field most nights and have a legit 1-4 playoff rotation

      1. Exactly. And how the Nats won the WS was as you indicated, with front line starting pitching. Problem with Dodgers is that many players don’t have even enough splits so depending on the hand the pitcher throws with that’s where platooning comes in. they get by in the regular season but most here knew it would not get to and through with a WS win..
