Dodgers Free Agency: Interest ‘Mutual’ Between Max Scherzer and Cardinals
Of the more than a dozen Dodgers on free agent market this offseason, one name that might be drawing the most widespread interest is Max Scherzer. The 2021 Cy Young finalist came to LA via trade at the deadline and went on a dominant streak of epic proportions. The Dodgers won each of his 11 starts in blue where he posted a 1.98 ERA over 68.1 innings pitched.
Mad Max proved that despite his age — he turned 37 in July — he can still get it done at a high level. Just so long as he doesn’t burn himself out by pitching in relief and on short rest.
The Dodgers would love to have the right-hander back in the rotation in 2022. However, just about every other team with World Series hopes has interest in him as well. The most recent link comes from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch where Derrick Goold had this to say.
The interest in Max Scherzer is mutual, so it becomes a question of cost, length of commitment and whether the Cardinals can outbid other suitors.
The cost, per reports, is high. MLB Trade Rumors predicts a three-year deal that could be worth as much as $40 million annually. The Athletic opined that $50 million per year could be in the realm of possibility. With the Cardinals reportedly inking left-hander Steven Matz to a four-year contract on Wednesday, the path to a deal with Scherzer may have become less clear.

By all accounts, the Dodgers still remain very much in on the future Hall of Famer, but with so many other important free agents on the market (Corey Seager, Clayton Kershaw, Chris Taylor among others), and the uncertainty surrounding the Trevor Bauer situation and his contract in 2022, there has been a marked emphasis on payroll in Friedman’s statements this offseason. Luckily the partnership between Scherzer and LA was a positive one.
