Dodgers’ Free Agent J.D. Martinez Reportedly ‘Likes’ Idea of Playing For the New York Mets

Despite having an All-Star level season with the Dodgers in 2023, free-agent slugger J.D. Martinez remains unsigned. It’s been one of the strange occurrences to develop this offseason, especially with the regular season quickly approaching.

Martinez bet on himself last year when he signed with the Dodgers and he helped them put together a historic offensive attack. He appeared in 113 games for Los Angeles, hitting .271 with 33 home runs and 103 runs batted in.

Normally, he would have remained with the Dodgers, but their addition of Shohei Ohtani closed the door on any reunion. Martinez showed that he can still provide a contender with a powerful bat and he has been linked to multiple teams this offseason.

One of which is the New York Mets, whom Martinez reportedly “likes” the idea of playing for. The New York Post’s Jon Heyman was the one to report the interest from the slugger.

If Martinez were to sign with the Mets, it would be a good addition for them. Putting his bat into their lineup could cause issues for opponents to scheme against, including the Dodgers.

He would become their full-time designated hitter in all likelihood, giving them a massive upgrade at the position. New York had a carousel of players in the designated hitter spot last season, but all were fairly inconsistent.

New York would be much more of a threat to Los Angeles if Martinez does land there, but he deserves to go to a contending club. It seems that his free agency may be coming to an end sooner rather than later, but everything remains fluid.
