Dodgers Game Updates vs Angels: Vesia is the Opener in LA’s Final Game Before the All-Star Break

The Dodgers look to end the first half with a mini series sweep over the Angels at Dodger Stadium. They’ll do so with an opener on the mound and that guy is Alex Vesia (0-4, 7.08 ERA). Anaheim counters with left-hander Reid Detmers (2-5, 3.72 ERA).

Dave Roberts expects Michael Grove to pick up the bulk of the workload for LA tonight.

MLB Standings

Here’s a look at the lineup the Dodgers are sending out against the Halos.

Starting right fielder for the NL All-Star team, Mookie Betts, moves back out to the outfield after spending a few days in the infield for Dave Roberts. Miguel Vargas gets back in the lineup at second base as the Dodgers load the lineup full of right-handed batters vs the left-handed pitcher.

There’s a chance this could be the last big league game Vargas sees for a little bit.

Pitching Matchup

Alex Vesia is “starting” a game for the first time in his career. The left-hander has been up and down for the Dodgers this season but has pitched really well since his most recent call up — including a three pitch strikeout of Shohei Ohtani on Friday night.

Reid Detmers is making start number 16 of the season on his 24th birthday. The 2020 first round pick has been solid for the Angels this season while striking out a career high 11.3 batters per 9. He’s 0-3 with a 5.17 ERA vs the Dodgers in his career.
