Dodgers’ Gavin Lux Drawing Major Trade Interest From 2 AL Contenders: Report
The Los Angeles Dodgers are overflowing with talent.
After signing Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim — a three time Gold Glove winner in the Korean Baseball Organization and career .304/.364/.403 hitter — some questions have recently been raised about L.A.’s infield.
With fan-favorite Kiké Hernández not currently rostered, an unclear role for long-time utility man Chris Taylor in 2025, and Los Angeles signing Kim, who mainly plays the same position as Gavin Lux, there has been much speculation regarding a trade surrounding at least one of these names.
Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes, however, doesn’t quite believe a trade is necessary after the Kim signing.
“I think it’s more that we’re adding a really talented player, and [then will] see where things play out,” Gomes said. “It’s helpful to have really strong pieces at a lot of different areas. So that’s how we’re viewing it right now.”
Regarding a trade, the Dodgers “don’t feel like there’s anything necessarily that we need to do,” according to the general manager.
Despite this, the New York Yankees are reportedly interested in the 27-year-old Lux, per Sports Illustrated’s Pat Ragazzo.
If the World Series runners-up in fact made a deal with Los Angeles, Lux could be a cheaper option than free agent infielder Alex Bregman, who is believed to be seeking a contract near $200 million, per MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart.
Another benefit for New York if they made this move would be keeping Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third-base — where he predominately played for the Yankees after acquiring him at the trade deadline — and have Lux seemlessly fit in as a second-baseman.
The Seattle Mariners, on the other hand, are believed to also be pursuing a Gavin Lux trade, per Ragazzo, but more aggressively than last year’s AL pennant winners.
The Mariners are in need of a talented infielder given their offer to Kim fell short against the Dodgers. Additionally, they declined the option on Jorge Polanco and missed out on another potential target in Gleyber Torres signing with the Detroit Tigers.
Similar to the Yankees, a more affordable contract in Lux would be a benefit to Seattle and their 15th lowest payroll in MLB.
Lux was drafted 20th overall in the 2016 MLB Draft by the Dodgers and has remained in the organization ever since, making his MLB debut in 2019. He missed the entirety of the 2023 season due to an ACL injury and had a solid showing in 2024, helping the Dodgers win their eighth World Series.
