Dodgers Pitcher Gavin Stone’s Season is Officially Over

The Dodgers are no longer delaying the inevitable: Gavin Stone’s season is over.

Stone was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Tuesday in order to clear a 40-man roster spot for Edgardo Henriquez.

Stone, 25, was in line to receive Rookie of the Year votes after being the Dodgers’ most reliable starting pitcher for the first five months of the season. In his first full major league season, Stone went 11-5 with a 3.53 ERA in 25 starts across 140.1 innings. He struck out 116 batters and allowed a 1.211 WHIP.

However, the Dodgers placed Stone on the 15-day IL on Sept. 6 with right shoulder inflammation. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters last Wednesday in Miami that he was “very unlikely” to return from the injured list, as he had been unable to throw to that point in his rehab.

The timing of the injury made Stone’s return this season far from certain. The news that he had not been able to throw effectively confirmed Stone would not be part of the Dodgers’ October plans. Tuesday’s news made it official.

Henriquez is a hard-throwing reliever who will try to complete an already remarkable season by forcing his way into the Dodgers’ postseason pitching plans.

The 22-year-old right-hander began the season at low-A Rancho Cucamonga and was promoted from to the Class-A Great Lake Loons in May. A month later, he was promoted to the Double-A Tulsa Drillers, where he played until his Triple-A promotion in August.

Henriquez went 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 14 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City, striking out 18 batters and walking 10 in 12.2 innings.

With the opportunity to give Henriquez a look, and Stone showing no signs of being ready to pitch anytime soon, the Dodgers’ latest roster move made perfect sense. The expected conclusion to Stone’s season is still disappointing. The Dodgers will ostensibly look ahead to his healthy return in 2025.
