Dodgers Highlights: Dustin May Exits Early, James Outman Plays Hero as LA Wins Another Series
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday by a score of 7-3, taking the series and moving to 28-16 on the year. The Dodgers have now won six consecutive series, playing as well as anyone in baseball right now.
James Outman was the hero of the game, busting out of his slump with a 7th inning, go-ahead grand slam, his second of the year.
The biggest story of the game, however, came in the first inning, when Dodgers RHP Dustin May exited after throwing just 16 pitches.
May’s velocity was down a bit, and it didn’t take long for the Dodgers to remove him from the game. The Dodgers said he was dealing with right elbow pain, which is the last thing anyone wants to hear considering he had Tommy John surgery just two years ago.
May was replaced by RHP Dylan Covey, who was officially added to the active roster right before the game.
The Dodgers still had to play a game, though, and Covey more than held his own on Wednesday.
Covey’s Coming Out Party
Dylan Covey entered Wednesday’s game with a career 6.57 ERA across four seasons at the MLB level. He came into the game in a difficult spot, and had a solid outing slowing down the Twins’ offense.
Covey ended up going four-plus innings and allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out three.
He left in a bit of a jam in the 6th inning, leaving the bases loaded with nobody out in a 2-2 game. However, LHP Victor Gonzalez came in and did his best Harry Houdini impression, getting three straight outs and leaving the bases loaded.
James Outman Finally Breaks Through
The Dodgers offense did a great job of getting AL Cy Young candidate Sonny Gray out of the game after just four innings, and putting the game on the Twins’ bullpen. That ended up working out great.
James Outman entered the game in quite the slump, but finally got some luck with an infield single in the fourth inning.
Clearly, Outman just needed to see one go in. Because when he came up in his next at-bat with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, he came through. Outman crushed a grand slam to center field — his second grand slam of the season — giving the Dodgers the 7-3 lead. That ended up being the difference in the game.

The Dodgers travel to St. Louis after this game for a four-game series with the Cardinals. The Dodgers swept the Cardinals in a three-game set at the end of April, so they’ll be hoping to continue that success.
