Dodgers Injury News: RHP Alex Reyes Out for the Season

Bad news out of Dodger camp on Sunday as got a less than ideal update on injured reliever, Alex Reyes. Unfortunately, the right-hander underwent a second shoulder operation this week and is out for the season.

Bill Plunkett of the OC Register was the first to report the news.

The Dodgers signed Reyes this offseason knowing that he was coming off an injury and surgery but the hope was that he would be able to return by mid-season this year. But, as he ramped up his activity in March, his surgically repaired right shoulder started barking again.

Pain in his shoulder returned as he increased the intensity of his throwing sessions and Reyes was shut down. More damage was found in another area of his shoulder (not the repaired labrum) and he underwent surgery on Friday. The recovery time is expected to be at least 12 months.

The Dodgers were hoping they were getting a secret weapon with the 28-year-old. He was an all-star in 2021 and owns a career 2.86 ERA with 31 saves in 36 chances.

Reyes is done for the season but his future in Dodger blue may not be over. Over the winter, the Dodgers inked him to a one year deal worth $1.1 million that included a team option for 2024 at $3 million.

LA has experienced uncharacteristically bad luck this year when it comes to buy low relievers coming off injury that could help the team at some point along the way. Reyes is out. Jimmy Nelson is trying to battle back from Tommy John surgery in 2021 and has been shut down multiple times. Daniel Hudson has battled back and forth with his surgically repaired left knee, but the team is hopeful he can join the club in a few weeks.

Add in general struggles from the healthy guys on the roster and it’s been a rough go of it for the bullpen in 2023.

Fingers are still crossed that any of Walker Buehler, Blake Treinen, or offseason addition J.P. Feyereisen can help at some point this season.
