Dodgers: LA President of Baseball Ops Reveals Infield Plan for 2023

The 2023 Dodgers roster is set, for the most part. Barring any other signings or trades, we have a good understanding of who will be on the roster and serve a significant role.

Many of LA’s core guys from the mid to late 2010s are gone and will look a little different compared to years past.

Trea Turner is gone, Justin Turner is gone, and LA’s infield will look utterly different from what we became accustomed to. Because of that, younger guys on the squad will look at more prominent roles this offseason, which will come in the infield.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Freidman went on the MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM and gave some intel on how he envisions the Dodgers infield to look like this upcoming season.

Obviously, Freddie Freeman will be the everyday first baseman, but to have Max Muncy at third base and Miguel Vargas at second base is quite a surprise. Muncy has experience at third base; he even played 84 games at third, starting in 80 of those.

However, Vargas at second is quite a shock. He didn’t play second base at all with the Dodgers big league club, and in Oklahoma City, he only played and started there seven times in 2022.
Vargas has experience all over the field, but every little has come at second base.

To no one’s surprise, Gavin Lux will be at shortstop, and Chris Taylor will be in the outfield, mostly in left field and probably center field at times. Miguel Rojas will come out every now and then and provide the spark LA will need off the bench.

The stars aren’t there as they were last season, but these guys know what it’s like to don the Dodger blue and will be ready to compete throughout the entire 162-game schedule.

I’m looking forward to seeing what this Dodger infield has in store for us.

  1. By the end of spring training we should have a better idea if Vargas at second will work. Does he have the range? Does he have the footwork to turn two? I would be more comfortable with Chris Taylor at second and Vargas at third. Until Muncy proves he has his bat back he should sit or DH (actually this might be the best time to trade him).

  2. Was there a big change at the top of the Dodgers organization? It seems like they’re more concerned about money than about putting a good team on the field. I also heard that their farm system has been gutted. I sure hope I’m wrong about all this, but it’s not looking good.
