Dodgers News: Andrew Friedman, Mark Walter the Personnel Mentioned in Shohei Ohtani’s Contract Clause

The details surrounding Shohei Ohtani’s contract with the Dodgers are continuing to be revealed. On Thursday, we found out that there is one opt-out in the contract, but it’s not a traditional one. Ohtani is eligible to opt out at the end of the respective season if either chairman and controlling owner of the Dodgers Mark Walter, or president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman are not in their position any longer.

This is Ohtani’s way of making sure that the organization holds up its end of the bargain with him to continue spending throughout the duration of his career. He agreed to defer all but $2 million of his annual salary each season until the conclusion of his deal, to help the team remain competitive.

Ohtani also likely did this because he trusts these two men in charge. He doesn’t want a repeat of what happened during his time with the Los Angeles Angels.

Originally, Ohtani joined because he had a connection with former general manager Billy Eppler. But Eppler was fired just a few seasons into his stay with the team. The Angels saw no success while Ohtani was on the team, and he wants to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

This is a power move by Ohtani in a way, but one that is rightfully deserved. He is being treated like the once-in-a-lifetime star that he is, and both sides are putting a lot of trust in one another.

The hope is that this trust helps lead the team to multiple World Series titles, which is the ultimate goal for Ohtani over the back half of his career.
