Dodgers News: Crosstown Angels Eying J.D. Martinez Says New York Post Insider

With the Dodgers’ signing of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani this winter, it closed the door for a reunion with slugger J.D. Martinez. Martinez was seen as a good candidate to return to L.A. if the front office had failed to land Ohtani, and now he has been searching for a new home.

Martinez was one of the more productive members of the Dodgers offense this past season, and he helped the team set records. He had a bounceback season for himself, hitting .271 with 33 home runs and 103 runs batted in.

With his productive season, he set himself up to potentially land a lucrative free-agent contract this offseason. Many people have speculated that he will receive a multi-year deal with a nice annual average salary.

His market has been slow to develop while waiting for other top free agents to sign, but things seem to be picking up. He has been linked with the Arizona Diamondbacks previously, and it’s now being reported that the crosstown Los Angeles Angels are looking into signing him.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman has reported that the Angels are eyeing Martinez to take over their open designated hitter spot for next season.

“The Mets and Angels are eying top free-agent DH J.D. Martinez”

Per Jon Heyman of The New York Post

With Ohtani heading to the Dodgers, the Angels have an opening that Martinez could fill. It would be ironic if Martinez signed with the Angels since it would essentially be the two teams swapping their designated hitters from 2023.

Martinez could provide the Halos with a solid bat in the middle of their lineup, and he would bring more veteran experience to the table. Alongside Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon, the Angels could have a good offensive attack if they are able to stay healthy.

Fans would much rather see Martinez land with the Angels over the rival Diamondbacks, so hopefully, they come in with a big contract offer. Martinez will be missed with the Dodgers, but he made an impact with the franchise during his one season with the team.

  1. I admired JD since his years with the Dbacks and always wished the Ds would sign him. When they finally did, I was thrilled. Quality player, I wish we could keep him.
