Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Trying to Remain Patient with Daniel Hudson

Sometimes injuries just take the best of us. That sentiment is true for Dodgers relief pitcher Daniel Hudson, who tore his ACL last summer and is still recovering from the process. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gave an update on the reliever but still says that he isn’t ready to return to action.

“Huddy’s been really good,” Roberts said. “I think he’s getting very anxious so I think a couple weeks but, I don’t want to put him in a corner.”

The veteran pitcher was explosive for the team during his limited time last season. In just 24.1 innings, Hudson held an ERA of 2.22 and was one of the more relied upon members of the team’s bullpen.

His injury was a big blow to the Dodgers last season and the team had hoped that he would be making his return here soon. Hudson will play for the Dodgers this season in all likelihood and if he can even be somewhat as productive as he was last season, it will be helpful.

“I know he’s going to get here soon as he can but once he does get here, he’s going to make us better,” Roberts said. “Getting another high-leverage guy that’s kind of been there will make us better.”

However, the team can’t rely on Hudson being the same as he was last season as ACL injuries are tough to come back from, especially for a 36-year-old.

Hudson has been rehabbing at the Arizona Complex League and has looked good. This is even more of a signal that he will join the boys in blue sooner rather than later.

The Dodgers bullpen has been a major concern so far this season. They have missed having someone like Hudson that they could rely on game in and game out. As a unit, the Dodgers bullpen ERA sits second-to-last in all of baseball with a 4.90 ERA. That would be the worst in the team’s history since moving to Los Angeles.

If the Dodgers have any hope of winning meaningful games come October, the bullpen will need to be addressed. Getting Hudson back will only help this quest and the Dodgers should be better off for it.
