Dodgers News: Freddie Freeman Talks About What LA Needs This Year and Was Missing Last NLDS

After having one of the best regular seasons in MLB history in 2022, the Dodgers’ postseason run was abruptly shut down when they lost to the Padres in four games during the NLDS.

Now as the Dodgers head back into another NLDS with another division foe, the team knows what they need to do differently to avoid last year’s disaster.

Freddie Freeman, who was one of the Dodgers’ best hitters in that series against the Padres, now realizes what the team did wrong last year and what they need to do to avoid the same fate this season.

“I think a lot of what went into last year was us just not hitting with runners in scoring position,” Freeman said. “I wish there was a blueprint of ‘This is what we need to do better,’ but it’s really if we could get the big hit. That’s what playoffs are, it’s if you can get a guy or two on, hit a big three run home run — pitching is obviously massive in the playoffs. But, if we can just get the big hit this year I think we’ll be OK.”

When the Dodgers got runners in scoring position last year, the bats went silent. In the three games they lost, the Dodgers went 2-26 with runners in scoring position.

The Dodgers were only able to score seven runs in the three games that they lost against San Diego last year. In those games, only two of those runs came off of hits with runners in scoring position.

Now the Dodgers are hoping to flip the script heading into the 2023 playoffs. Throughout the season the Dodgers were fourth in the league with runners in scoring position, only following the Orioles, Astros and Rangers, all playoff teams.

Hopefully, the Dodgers can learn from their past mistakes and figure out a way to manufacture runs against the Diamondbacks. That will be the key to a long postseason run.
