Dodgers News: LA Drops a Spot in Latest MLB Power Rankings

It’s been a weird year for the Dodgers. As we head closer to July, the team sits in contention for a playoff spot but if you were to ask most fans, they wouldn’t feel overly confident entering the playoffs. This is in part due to their issues in the pitching department but if we know anything about this team, they will make moves to correct their issues. But for now, this team remains a wild card each game out and it caused them to drop games in June that they normally would have won.

These struggles also saw them drop one spot in the latest MLB.com Power Rankings. LA came in at number seven, only dropping one spot from last time out. The team has picked things up over the last week as they went 4-1 with series wins against the Angels and Astros. But they can’t rest on their laurels and need to continue picking up victories to stay within reach in the NL West.

The Dodgers find themselves in third place within their division, behind the upstart Arizona Diamondbacks and the gritty San Francisco Giants. But despite all their issues this season, they are only a few games back of the division lead. This speaks more to who they are as a ballclub than anything in my opinion.

The formula for success is there for this Dodgers team but they just need to shore up a few things as the trade deadline approaches. LA will have options to improve the roster and if they can fix a few things in the bullpen, they can make a run. They will also be getting some of their injured players back soon and that should help put some issues to bed as well.

The Dodgers have been plagued all season long with the injury bug and manager Dave Roberts has done his best to manage. Yes, he has made some boneheaded decisions as well but for the most part, he has been forced to work with what he has available.

The hope of another World Series run is still alive and it’s now up to President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman and company to make some big decisions. The Diamondbacks and Giants remain real threats to the division and LA doesn’t want to be scratching and clawing their way to a postseason spot as the season winds down. The time is now and while Friedman has earned the benefit of the doubt from fans to be patient as he scopes the market, this team can’t afford to wait too long.

LA has an off day today before they head out on a road trip where they will see the Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Royals. One or two strong weeks and the Dodgers could find themselves back atop the division. That’s both the beauty and curse of baseball.
