Dodgers News: San Francisco Giants Reportedly ‘Looming’ As Favorites to Land Blake Snell
Somehow it’s March 17 and free agent starting pitcher Blake Snell remains unsigned. He has been connected to multiple teams this offseason, including the Dodgers.
It’s unlikely that Snell will wind up in Los Angeles, but the team can always use more starting pitcher help. He would give them a proven playoff performer and best of all, they wouldn’t have to face him any longer.
However, the Dodgers aren’t seen as the favorites, but instead a direct rival in the NL West. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the San Francisco Giants are now “looming” as favorites for the reigning Cy Young winner.

The Giants have been linked with Snell all offseason, in part due to his connection with former Padres manager Bob Melvin. Melvin knows better than anyone how dominant Snell can be, so the connection makes sense.
There was some thought that Snell could be headed to the Houston Astros earlier this week, but Nightengale is reporting that the two sides couldn’t agree on a deal. Nightengale also said that Snell is looking for at least a two-year deal, worth $60 million.
“The Houston Astros, who exchanged contract proposals this week for two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell, now appear to be long-shots to sign him. They have balked at Snell’s asking price of at least a two-year guarantee for $60 million, including an opt-out after the 2024 season.”

Teams have turned down Snell’s high asking price all winter, so he has seemingly brought it down. It’s been reported that his camp is open to a short-term deal, which includes opt-outs. This type of contract could open the door for a team like the Dodgers if they are interested.
Los Angeles would much rather not see Snell head up north, but interested teams seem to be dwindling. As with anything in free agency, things are fluid, but it seems that the long free agency of Snell may be coming to a close sooner rather than later.

We don’t know the real reason why the Dodgers are not interested in signing Blake Snell, but it must be asked why, with all the deferred Ohtani money at their disposal, wouldn’t they sign him for his 2 year-$60 million dollar asking price, plus further year options?
Andrew Friedman and Stan Kasten must like watching Snell consistently sticking it up LA’s ass.
This is a NO BRAINER! You can bet that if the Giants sign him, he will continue to dominate the Dodgers. Does LA really believe their front line starting pitching is healthy and experienced enough to weather and sustain a 162 game schedule? Why wouldn’t they want to sign the current NL Cy Young winner? It can’t be about money because they have plenty of deferred money available.
What’s the real story here? Someone needs to pin the two geniuses, Friedman and Kasten, to the wall and have them fess up as to what’s holding them back from further cementing a solid chance for the Dodgers to win it all in 2024!
IF Snell goes to a divisional rival, or a serious contending NL team, that could present a problem for LA. Why not take him off the market, and bring him to the Dodgers, a team that definitely needs HEALTHY starters? Other than Tyler Glasnow, who are the proven healthy starters that LA needs to weather the early season months while waiting for others to return from injury?
Remember, it usually takes pitchers, coming off elbow or shoulder surgery, 2 years to regain their form and harness and capture their previous ‘stuff.’ This alone is reason enough to sign Snell.
It’s also another sign in the continuing discussion of why, for the last decade, the Dodgers’ front office keeps missing the obvious choices, and their decisions “just ain’t good enough” to win multiple World Series titles.
