Blake Snell to Dodgers? How LA Could Poach Reigning NL Cy Young Winner in Free Agency

The Dodgers have committed over $1.3 billion this offseason bolstering the starting rotation with elite talent. Those contracts include a 12-year deal for NPB superstar Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a five-year deal for Tyler Glasnow, and a one-year deal for left-hander James Paxton.

Beyond that, the Dodgers also get back Walker Buehler from his second Tommy John surgery. Clayton Kershaw will also return to the team sometime in the summer.

While it seems like the rotation has no spots, Dodgers Nation’s own Doug McKain talked about how and why the Dodgers could land another big fish — Blake Snell. You can watch the full breakdown by clicking the video at the top of the article, or by clicking right here.

McKain breaks down how, even after the additions to the rotation, the Dodgers could still use another starting pitcher. He talks about how the recent contracts to Matt Chapman and former Dodger Cody Bellinger give the Dodgers a leg up on other teams trying to sign the reigning National League Cy Young winner.

The team could always use more arms. Year after year it feels like the Dodgers limp into the playoffs in regards to the rotation. They start the year with plenty of depth, but injuries or other circumstances cut through that depth quickly.

So, why not take advantage of a slow market, and poach the reigning Cy Young winner in a short team, high AAV deal with tons of opt outs?

  1. It’s not going to happen but my god would it be hilarious to see the other 29 fan bases cry about it and scream about how the Dodgers are cheating. At this point I hope the Dodgers just go full Evil Empire and win 5 of the next 10 World Series or somethin. Everybody is going to try and discount everything the Dodgers do no matter what so might as well just go buy the entire league at this point lol

    1. Not a Dodgers fan, but I half expect them to swoop in and sign Snell. They have deep pockets and all of a sudden they have a big need for another pitcher. They could sign Michael Lorenzen as a #4 or 5 guy, but that’s not their style. If LA does not win a world series soon with the team they have, it could start to get a bit embarrassing for the Dodgers FO, and Dave Roberts job may not be as secure as he and everyone else is led to believe. I don’t know any fans outside LA who take their 2020 short season WS championship seriously.

  2. Why it won’t happen: A high AAV deal would still cost them at least 40m per year. With their 110% tax hit, it would cost them 88m. As solid as Snell is, he isn’t worth 88m. No one is.

    1. It’s not your money so don’t worry about it sign him and get some World Series rings

      1. Sorry Mikie, but the guy is right. No one will pay a guy 88 million that only plays 1/6 of the innings played.

  3. Snell for one season would be a good fix for the rotation problem. It would have been better to get Burnes instead of Paxton and then not worry about the fifth or sixth starter, just use anyone from OKC for that role, but that did not happen Extending Glasnow for 5 years when he has never pitched over 120 innings [and that only once] was questionable, especially with Ohtani, Gonsolin, May and maybe Kershaw and maybe Buehler available in 2025. But that was done. They must really think he will be a Cy Young candidate for a few years. I would not be surprised if something does happen before April. I have a feeling they are not done making moves for the rotation.

  4. It doesn’t matter how many great pitchers the Dodgers have; they will never win a World Series with Roberts as manager. He is an idiot when it comes to managing pitchers and he doesn’t know how to manage a bullpen.

    1. Wow… very poetic… thats what I have been saying for the last 3 years. Roberts is a freaking knucklehead and idiot. He cut manage in. Short season because he relies way too much on statistics. Statistics doesn’t work in a shirt season like the playoffs. DODGERS WILL NEVER WIN AS LONG AS ROBERTS IS COACH.

  5. It is best to trade people before their decline. I would trade Muncy, Cartaya, Grove, and Yarborough for a good young 3rd baseman who is on a 1st or 2nd year contract. I would use Muncy’s money to land Snell and get the left hander. That would give a team 2 pitchers, a catcher, and a third baseman who will hit 30 home runs. Too many pitchers are question marks so not all will end up well. Against the odds……Muncy makes $12 million a year plus the amount paid to the othe players listed………The Dodgers can make a package that would cover half the cost for Snell……..at $44 million (counting tax) it is an aweseom benefit to the Dodgers…….Sign Snell on a 2 year contract. If you keep Muncy until the end of his 2 year contract you will get zip………best to do it now!!!!!!!!!!

  6. April 5 starters 1. Yamamoto 2. Snell 3. Glasnow 4. Miller 5. Paxton

Add in the month of May 6. Buehler

    Injury Replacements June 7. Stone

Injury Replacements July 8. Dustin May

    August 9. Kershaw 10. Sheehan 11. Hurt 12. Knack

2025: Add Ohtani maybe Sasaki Lose Snell Buehler Paxton

  7. Wow… very poetic… thats what I have been saying for the last 3 years. Roberts is a freaking knucklehead and idiot. He cut manage in. Short season because he relies way too much on statistics.
