Dodgers News: Will Smith Is Trying to Not Pay Attention to the All-Star Vote

Dodgers catcher Will Smith is as close to an All-Star Game as he’s ever been.

Smith, who’s in his fifth year in the league, has been one of the premier catchers in baseball since he burst onto the scene in 2019.

Since 2020, his first full season, he leads all qualifying National League catchers in home runs, runs batted in, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, walks, OPS, WRC+ and WOBA.

However, despite his immense amount of success, he has no All-Star games to show for it.

This year, Smith made it past Phase 1 of voting, and is up against Braves catcher Sean Murphy for the starting spot in the National League.

After the first day of voting, Murphy leads Smith with 56 percent of the vote.

It’s a bit baffling to see Murphy leading Smith, considering the Dodgers catcher is better than the Braves catcher this season in terms of WRC+, wins above replacement, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS, OPS+, fielding percentage, walk percentage and strikeout percentage entering Tuesday, but that’s just the world we live in right now.

However, there’s still more than enough time to get Smith into the All-Star Game, and you can vote by clicking right here. Voting ends on Thursday, June 29.

The Dodgers and their fans have made a huge effort to get Smith into the game — something he deserves more than anyone in the league — but he’s trying his best to not pay attention to it.

“I’m sure I’ll see it,” Smith said when asked about the All-Star vote. “I’ll let that take care of itself. I can’t control it.”

Obviously Smith has been robbed a few too many times, so he knows there’s no point in worrying about the All-Star Game anymore. However, Dodger fans know that Smith needs to be in this year’s game, so we have to do everything we can to right this wrong and get Smith as an All-Star starter in Seattle this season.
