With under a month left in the 2023 MLB season, the clock is ticking for some players to save their seasons from injury. One of those players who are at risk of having their season ended due to injury is Dodgers pitcher Yency Almonte.
Almonte has been on the injured list since August 12 after the right-hander went down with a knee sprain suffered in a scoreless outing against the Rockies.
Now that there are fewer than 25 games left in the season, Almonte’s 2023 campaign could be in jeopardy as the latest update does not sound promising.
Manager Dave Roberts spoke with reporters this weekend, sharing the latest on the injured reliever.
“Obviously time’s ticking. You can’t rush it,” Roberts said. “He can only do what his body will allow for. He’s getting better every day but honestly until he gets off a mound and starts facing hitters it’s just not going to be a real conversation.”Via Orange County Register
Before he got injured Almonte was having a down year with the Dodgers. In 49 appearances, he posted a 5.06 ERA.
Control has been an issue for the Florida native. He is four walks away from setting his career high in walks allowed, which he set in 2021 with the Rockies.
When Almonte was putting the ball in the zone this year, he was missing bats. He set a career-high in strikeouts already despite missing a month with 49.
Almonte was right in the middle of the bullpen’s struggles this season. When the team was towards the bottom of the league in bullpen ERA, Almonte was contributing to a large part.
If Almonte can come back in time for the postseason, the Dodgers bullpen will keep on getting busy as a lot of relief pitchers are currently making their way back from the IL.
When it comes to the playoffs, a team can never have enough pitching and if his knee holds up, Almonte could be a part of a good problem for the Dodgers.
