Dodgers’ NL West Rival Giants, Matt Chapman Agree to 3-Year Deal: Report

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ competition in the National League West just got a little stiffer. Late Friday night, the San Francisco Giants agreed to a three-year, $54 million deal with All Star free agent third baseman Matt Chapman. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported the news.

Chapman was the best remaining position player on the market, and finally cashed in on a three-year deal very similar to the one former Dodgers MVP Cody Bellinger signed with the Chicago Cubs.

Chapman has opt-outs after the first two years, and will get $20 million in the first year, $18 million in the second year and $16 million in the third year if he opts in.

Chapman is a one-time All Star and four-time Gold Glove award winner at third base. Across his seven-year career with the Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays, Chapman is a .240 hitter with 155 home runs and 462 RBIs.

Last year in Toronto, Chapman appeared in 140 games, and slashed .240/.330/.424 with 17 home runs and 54 runs batted in while playing Gold Glove defense at the hot corner.

Chapman is a great addition for San Francisco, a team that’s been desperate to add talent over the last few offseasons.

After striking out on so many star players like Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa, Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto over the last two offseasons, they were able to bring in Jung-Hoo Lee and now Chapman this offseason. This comes after former Dodgers All-Star J.D. Martinez reportedly rejected a $15 million offer to play in San Francisco.

The NL West will again be a strong division, with the Dodgers, Giants, San Diego Padres and reigning NL champion Arizona Diamondbacks all competing for postseason spots.
