Dodgers Roster News: Emmet Sheehan Officially Called Up, Michael Grove Optioned
The Dodgers have officially called up No. 13 overall prospect Emmet Sheehan for Friday’s series opener against the San Francisco Giants. While Sheehan was reportedly called up to Triple-A this past week, he never pitched there, so he’s technically coming straight from Double-A to the big leagues. To make room on the active roster, RHP Michael Grove was optioned.
#Dodgers also select the contract of Emmet Sheehan and optioned Michael Grove to Triple-A OKC.

Sheehan was absolutely dominant for the Tulsa Drillers this season. In 12 appearances (10 starts), Sheehan threw 53.1 innings, and sported an incredible 1.86 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and a .131 batting average against. He also had an incredible 88 strikeouts in just those 53.1 innings.
Sheehan is coming up to help a Dodgers pitching staff that is in desperate need of help. The team is currently playing with four starters, as Julio Urias remains on the injured list alongside Dustin May, Noah Syndergaard and Ryan Pepiot.
The team was planning on holding a bullpen game on Friday, however, the bullpen was tasked with pitching six innings yesterday, and used four relievers on Tuesday, five on Wednesday and another four on Thursday. This was all after Sunday’s bullpen game in Philadelphia.
So, it was clear that the Dodgers would need to make some sort of move to help the bullpen, and they decided to go with the surprise call up of Sheehan.
Sheehan is still just 23 years old, and will become the Dodgers’ seventh player to make their MLB debut this season.
Dodger fans should be very excited to see what he can do, as he helps the Dodgers in a time of great need. Here are some highlights from Sheehan, courtesy of our very own Doug McKain:
Emmet Sheehan will be making his Dodgers debut today. Sheehan is nasty. 88 Ks (14.9 K/9) in 53.1 for AA Tulsa. Electric fastball with a filthy changeup. Absolutely love this bold move by the org. Bet on raw talent with high ceiling upside potential.

As for Grove, he’s struggled since coming off the injured list. His velocity has been up, but he’s allowed four earned runs in each of his three starts. On Thursday, he allowed four solo home runs to the White Sox.
