Dodgers Roster News: LA Officially Places Dustin May On IL, 2 Bullpen Arms Recalled
The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially placed RHP Dustin May on the injured list with what they’re calling a “right forearm strain” he suffered in the first inning of Wednesday’s game. May is going to be out for at least a month, but the team is giving him a PRP injection, in the hopes that he’s able to return within the next six weeks.
With May heading to the IL, the team had an open spot on the active roster. However, they decided to make it two.
Right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey, following his incredible performance on Wednesday, was designated for assignment. With the two open roster spots, LHP Justin Bruihl — who was just sent down on Wednesday to make room for Covey — and RHP Andre Jackson are now back with the team.
Bruihl would have had to wait 15 days before coming back up if not for the injury to May. However, with the injury, Bruihl is able to come right back up and join the active roster.
Still, Bruihl pitched in three consecutive games on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, so he’ll likely still get another day or two off before coming back out of the Dodgers bullpen.
On the year, Bruihl has appeared in nine games and has a 2.53 ERA. However, he was somewhat left out to die on Tuesday, when he allowed a two-run home run on his third straight day of work, skyrocketing his ERA from below-2.
As for Jackson, he was sent down after struggling mightily in the majors. However, he’s settled in nicely in Triple-A, allowing three earned runs in 11 innings, good for a 2.45 ERA. After allowing five home runs in his 11.1 major league innings, he’s allowed none in Triple-A.
What Move Will the Dodgers Make Next?
Bruihl and Jackson coming up will help the bullpen, but it still leaves a question mark in the Dodgers rotation. Dustin May’s spot in the rotation isn’t scheduled to come up until Monday, so we should expect the Dodgers to make a move before then.
The likeliest move would be rookie RHP Gavin Stone coming back up and taking May’s spot in the rotation. Covey would have been an option to start that game, but with him being designated for assignment, Stone seems like the only good option left.
Once one of Ryan Pepiot or Michael Grove is healthy enough to come off the injured list, the Dodgers will have an influx of options to take that No. 5 spot in the rotation until May is (hopefully) able to return soon thereafter. But for now, it’s likely to be Stone.
