Dodgers Roster News: Victor Gonzalez Recalled from AAA, Reed Out Again

The Dodgers have made another roster move. On Saturday the club announced the return of Victor Gonzalez who was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. In a corresponding move, RHP Jake Reed has been designated for assignment. Again…

The Dodgers’ official Twitter account reported the move.

The revolving door bullpen continues for the Dodgers who will remain without de facto closer Evan Phillips who is away for the birth of his first child. Everyone besides Andre Jackson (who threw 3 innings and 63 pitches on Friday) should be available out of Dave Roberts’ bullpen.

Where Has Victor Gonzalez Been?

This is the first time Gonzalez has been on the active roster since 2021. Since then, he’s undergone an elbow clean up procedure and has been battling his way back to the big leagues. He actually got back on a mound toward the end of last season but the team did not call him up.

So far in 2023, Victor has done well at AAA OKC. The left-hander has a 1.29 ERA in 6 games. He’s struck out 12 but walked 5 in 7 innings pitched.

Gonzalez had his best run as a big league pitcher during the 2020 World Series championship season with LA posting a 3-0 record with a 1.33 ERA in the 60 game regular season and a 2.70 ERA in 8 postseason appearances.

Over the last year, the 27-year-old has worked extensively on his health and fitness, working with a trainer to lose more than 30 pounds in the process.

What Happens Next with Jake Reed?

With the DFA of Reed, the Dodgers will have 7 days to trade the reliever or be placed on outright waivers so the club can try to get him back to AAA OKC. Reed will eventually be able to elect free agency and try to sign with a new team. But in the past that has led him all around the country in his baseball journey.

The right-hander was lit up for 6 runs by the Cubs on Friday, recording only 2 outs after his rollercoaster to get to the ballpark.

You just can’t help but feel bad for Reed who has bounced around the league for the last few seasons.
