Dodgers Rumors: LA & Reds Discussing Potential Luis Castillo Trade
The trade deadline is weeks away, but Dodgers fans got their first real taste of the trade hot stove on Monday afternoon. The Dodgers starting staff has been the best in the business, even with Walker Buehler sidelined since mid-June. Through Sunday, LA has the best starter ERA in the majors (2.72), with San Diego a distant second at 3.60. That doesn’t mean they aren’t still fishing for Luis Castillo.
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported on Monday afternoon that the Dodgers and Reds have been in contact about the one-time All-Star.
“Sources: #Dodgers and #Reds have had preliminary trade conversations about RHP Luis Castillo. Many clubs are showing interest in Castillo, of course. Long way to go before Aug. 2 trade deadline, but Dodgers are definitely involved.”
Dodgers team president Andrew Friedman recently stated that, after trading away significant prospect capital the last couple of the seasons, the team is weary of weakening their farm system again this summer.
However, Friedman did note that the LA front office is willing to “explore anything and everything” and historically, has always pursued any trade they feel will improve their chances of winning a championship.
Castillo owns a 2.92 ERA and a 158 ERA+ in 12 starts this season, but did miss all of April due to injury.
If the Reds are willing to jettison the 29-year-old, they aren’t going to take 50 cents on the dollar. Castillo is in the prime of his career and won’t become a free agent until after the 2023 season.
In order to acquire Castillo, it will probably cost the Dodgers several top prospects.
Time will tell whether or not Friedman and the Dodgers are willing to pay the price to get Castillo in Dodger Blue.
