Dodgers Rumors: Writer Thinks LA Should Add Starting Pitcher, Outfielder Depth from Red Sox

As the trade deadline approaches, the Dodgers have some decisions to make. Do they be aggressive and address the holes within the roster? Or will they just add around the margins for depth purposes and hope that all the injuries to the team conclude? Either way, they need some help in the pitching department and that’s no secret. The team has dealt with injuries and inconsistency all season long so something must be addressed.

Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report came up with some trades that LA could look into, one of them being with the Boston Red Sox for some starting pitching depth and another outfielder. This one looks promising but it depends on the cost.

Dodgers get LHP James Paxton and OF Adam Duvall, Red Sox get RHP River Ryan and LHP Maddux Bruns: The Red Sox need young pitching, so it would be a nice little coup to turn Paxton and Duvall into the No. 13 and No. 15 prospects in the Dodgers’ system. Though both have control issues, Ryan and Bruns are live-armed hurlers who are having success in the minors”

Per Bleacher Report

LA could hit two birds with one stone if they were to make this deal. They would get a solid, veteran pitcher in Paxton, who could provide some stability at the end of the rotation. Plus they would get some additional outfielder help in Duvall, who has shown that he still has some pop left in his bat.

Paxton holds a record of 4-1, an ERA of 2.70 and 61 strikeouts over 50 innings of work this season. He has started eight games for Boston this year and has looked pretty decent after dealing with an injury earlier on. Paxton will be a free agent at the end of the season so if things don’t work out, the Dodgers can just part ways. He has been a great story to follow this season and would look good in Dodger blue for the postseason run.

As for Duvall, the former All-Star is hitting .269 with five home runs and 18 runs batted in entering Saturday. He would be seen as strictly a depth piece and option for the platoon that LA uses. Like Paxton, he is a free agent at the end of the season so it wouldn’t be too bad of a deal if it didn’t work out.

LA would be parting with some young arms but in order to get something of value, you need to give up something of value. The team has plenty of players in their farm system that losing Ryan and Bruns wouldn’t sting too badly. If this deal is on the table, I’d pull the trigger if I were President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman.
