Dodgers Sign Catcher, Bring Back Former LA Draft Pick on Minor League Contracts

The Los Angeles Dodgers are taking a shot on two free agents. They have signed catcher Chris Okey and utility man Brendon Davis to minor league deals, per the team’s transaction log on MLB.com.

Okey has spent most of his career in the minor leagues, making appearances in the major leagues in parts of two seasons.

He started his major league career with the Cincinnati Reds in 2022. The 29-year-old only played in seven games that year, where he slashed .167/.231/.167 with a .398 OPS, zero home runs, zero RBIs, and two hits.

After his short stint in Cincinnati, the Reds optioned Okey back to the minors, DFA’d him, and he was ultimately released a month later. The Los Angeles Angels took a chance on Okey as they signed him to a minor league deal before the start of the 2023 season.

He only played in two MLB games where he didn’t record any stats, but he does have one game of experience catching for new Dodger two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani from May 2023 with the Halos.

The Halos dropped that game, which came against their division rivals, the Houston Astros.

We’ll see what type of role Okey plays with the Boys in Blue and if he can make his way to the major league team. For now, he’ll act as catching depth in the minor leagues.

As for Davis, he’s made just three MLB appearances, all with the Detroit Tigers in 2022. Davis went 2-for-10 with three strikeouts, a walk and a stolen base. Last year in Triple-A, he had an OPS of .651 with five home runs and 14 RBIs in 43 games.

The 26-year-old was drafted by the Dodgers in the fifth-round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He was with the Dodgers until the 2017 season, when he was a part of the trade package for RHP Yu Darvish.

Davis is now back with the Dodgers, looking to make an impact in his age-27 season. He can play shortstop, third base and the outfield.
