Dodgers vs Giants: Lineups, Pregame Matchups, and More for September 7

The Dodgers eliminated the Giants from NL West contention on Tuesday night, which was more of a technicality than anything else, but it’s still always a good time to eliminate your biggest rival.

Los Angeles goes for the series win this afternoon, with Clayton Kershaw tasked with keeping the ball in the park. The two teams have combined for 12 home runs in the first two games, and with an expected game-time temperature of 96 degrees, the ball will probably be flying again today.

Kershaw, of course, has faced the Giants more than any team, going 24-15 with a 1.99 ERA in 55 games (53 starts). Among current Giants, Austin Slater has had more success against Kershaw than anyone in a large sample, but Slater is currently on the injured list. J.D. Davis is 3-for-8 against Kershaw with three homers, and Thairo Estrada is 2-for-4 with a homer.

San Francisco will counter with Alex Cobb, who has a 3.58 ERA overall this season but just 2.61 in his past 15 starts. He has faced the Dodgers twice in his career, both this season, and he’s 0-1 with a 5.25 ERA against them.

Cobb spent the first nine seasons of his career in the AL East, so of course Mookie Betts has faced him plenty, going 10-for-33 with three doubles and two homers for a .937 OPS. Miguel Vargas faced Cobb in his MLB debut and got his first two hits off the righty. Joey Gallo (1.143 OPS in seven plate appearances) and Max Muncy (1.100, six PA) have also had great success in tiny samples against Cobb.

Will Smith gets another day off today, which Dave Roberts said was part of the plan for this series. Cody Bellinger also sits, with Trayce Thompson in center and Gallo in left. Chris Taylor plays second base.

Today’s game will mark the 136th game of the season for LA. They are currently 93-42, on pace for nearly 112 wins. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 pm PT.
